  • Culinary Flexibility: Who can refuse a pizza? Or a hearty bowl of tomato soup? Tomatoes are the centerpiece in so many savory dishes.
  • High Demand for Variety: Avid home gardeners are always scouting for unusual tomato varieties. It gives them something to discuss at their gardening meetups!
  • Health Benefits: Tomatoes are rich in vitamins and nutrients. And they taste much better than kale!

About Steve List

From the Los Angeles Daily News:

“Teacher Steve List and hundreds of horticulture students at Sylmar High School have helped launch a green revolution of flowers, fruits and vegetables across the northeast San Fernando Valley.

“They’ve done it by cultivating a year-round cornucopia of seedlings and giving them free to willing nurturers throughout the community.

“When List took over the space in the school’s agriculture Regional Occupational Program seven years ago, it was a weed-choked lot filled with junk under canopy pine, pepper, eucalyptus and silk floss trees.

“Since then, the president of the Valley chapter of the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers has transformed it into a leafy nursery of shrubs, vegetable beds — everything from Brussels sprouts to bush peas to baby lettuce — and fruit trees, all fortified by the school’s own blend of enriched potting soil.”
